This is a virtual "gift card" which encapsulates its value with a semi-long alpha-numeric code. After you purchase it, Amazon sends an email with this code to the email address you specified at checkout. The email provides a link, which when clicked (if you are logged into your Amazon account) will give you the option to "add" the value of the gift card to your Amazon account's existing gift card balance, or if you do not yet have a gift card balance, adding a gift card to your available payment methods in your Amazon account. If you already have a gift card balance, it will simply add it to the existing balance and redeem (use up) this card value. You (or your email recipient) can then specify the gift card balance as a payment method at checkout for any Amazon order. The recipient DOES need to have an online Amazon account to utilize this gift card value.
